Genuine Upholstery leather (not synthetic leather) comes directly from animal hides and is not sold by the yard / metre in sheets or rolls like man-made fabrics or synthetic leathers.
The average cowhide is approximately 50 square feet (sq ft) but cows vary in size.
Often, upholsterers give estimates in fabric yards (54" wide x 36" long) instead of square feet which is how leather is always traded.
Don't worry, making the conversion from "by the yard" is easy! Use the calculator below to decide how much leather to buy. Rule of thumb: 1 fabric yard estimates to a requirement of 18 sq ft of leather.

Aniline leather
The softest most luxurious leather available anywhere today. It is a perfect leather for those who want the ultimate in looks and comfort. A leather treated with aniline as a dye.
Artificial leather
A fabric or finish intended to substitute for leather, also known as PU or synthetic leather. If you are a cost conscious person and don’t want to spend too much on furnishing furniture we recommend artificial leather. It can be used in upholstery for sofas, chairs, cushion-covers stc for homes, commercial establishments and hotels. with artificial leather, you will be able to experiment with colors and texture to a much greater extent and can style your furniture your way.
Bicast Leather
A synthetic upholstery product, made from split leather which is then laminated and strengthened with a polyethylene top layer.
Vegan Leather
A substitute to traditional leather used to make upholstery. It looks like real leather, and is much cheaper. Poromeric imitation leather:
A group of synthetic leather substitutes.Poromerics are typically made with a polyester fabric coated with polyurethane.
PU leather
A term for artificial leathers.
Bonded Leather
Man-made material composed of genuine leather fibers.
Patent leather
Leather with a high gloss and shiny finish. Usually has a plastic coating.
Ostrich leather
Leather from an ostrich.
Nappa leather
A full-grain leather.
Morocco leather
A type of goatskin dyed red.
Stingray leather
Also known as Shagreen, it is obtained from the skin of Stingray fish. Commonly produced in Thailand and Indonesia.
Vachetta leather
Popularised by Louis Vuitton, it is used in the trimmings of luggage and handbags. The leather is left untreated and is therefore susceptible to water and stains. Sunlight causes the natural leather to darken in shade, called a patina.
